[ARCHIVED] Comment on Historic District Design Standards

Draft update to Historic District Design Standards now complete and ready for public comment by October 31st

The Design Review Board (DRB) is finishing up a five-year project to update the Historic District Design Standards. The draft document is complete and is posted to the website for public review and comment. Postcards were mailed out to all business and property owners within the Historic District in September, requesting comment by October 31st.

Comments received will be compiled and discussed by the DRB at their November 8th meeting. Any revisions generated by the public comments will be discussed and, if necessary, integrated into the draft document before it goes to the City Council for a public hearing on December 5th.

The draft design standards document looks much different from the current version, which was adopted in 2000 and last revised in 2003. Although some regulations are new, many of the existing regulations remain, with clarified language and different images. New language has been drafted to close gaps and to address advances in technology that weren’t as common in 2003 (such as solar panels) as they are now. Descriptive intent statements have been added for each section, which will help future users in interpreting the standards.

The City website contains a page dedicated to this project, where all draft standards can be viewed and downloaded. A summary list of highlighted changes has been compiled on the page and an easy online comment form has been created and linked on the page for the public to use to provide written comments. Users do not need to sign into the website to provide a comment.

Please note that for comments to be considered by the DRB they must be submitted by October 31st.

Discussing the comments received will be the sole topic on the agenda of the DRB’s November 8th meeting.

The City Council is scheduled to hold a public hearing on the draft standards on December 5th.
