Calculating Occupancy Limits for Businesses Reopening after Covid-19 Closures

CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19) INFORMATION

Governor Jay Inslee recently issued a proclamation and guidelines allowing for the opening of restaurants and limited in-store retail operations for when the state enters Phase 2 for the reopening of businesses after the Covid-19 closures.

The guidelines limit occupancy of restaurants to 50% of the maximum building occupancy as determined by the City’s fire code.  Similarly, the occupancy for any in-store retail operation cannot exceed 30% of the fire code’s maximum building occupancy.

If you would like assistance in determining what the maximum building occupancy is for your business contact City Fire Marshal Sharon Pettit. She will need to know the:

  • Type of business;
  • Business’ address;
  • Gross square footage of the business;
  • Portion of the gross square footage not open to the public (e.g. kitchen, storage areas); and
  • Number of exit doors.

If you would like Sharon to assist you with this please email her at pettit@snohomishwa.gov. Include the above information in the email and put “Occupant Load Phase 2” in the subject line.
