Climate Planning

The passage of House Bill 1181 requires a new climate element by 2029 for all jurisdictions with populations of 6,000 and higher.  The City is being proactive about this upcoming requirement by rolling climate planning into the 2024 Comprehensive Plan Periodic Update process, since this provides the best opportunity for broad community engagement on the issues.

In January 2023, the City partnered with the University of Washington Livable City Year program, to work with Master of Urban Planning students on this project.  The students got to work right away, researching technical information and analyzing policies.  The project is still ongoing.

Climate Resilience Advisory Board (CRAB)

This community group is comprised of those with a particular interest in climate change and resilience strategies, or are located in a potentially impacted neighborhood.  The group will be meeting several times over the course of 2023 and 2024 to review information prepared by the students and make recommendations to staff and the Planning Commission for the Comprehensive Plan.
